Knowledge of several clays: fire-resistant clay, hard clay, soft clay, alumina clay.

Fire-resistant clay is a mixture of kaolinite mineral and other ores. According to the active standard of chemical components of technology, the fire-resistant temperature which is more than 1580℃’s clay and more than 1770℃’s alumina clay are both called fire-resistant clays.

Hard clay

Hard clay is mainly made up of kaolinite, hard diaspore, illite, pyrophyllite, etc. And the alumina oxide content is 30%-50% with fire-resistant temperature of 1630℃-1700℃ as well as good heat stability under high temperature and fire. Hard clay has a quality of solid and with the shape of massive or olitic, which is easy with air-slake without plasticity.

Soft clay

Soft clay is mainly made up of kaolinite, illite and montmorillonite with lower alumina oxide content, usually 22%-30% and fire-resistant temperature is more than 1580℃, lower than hard clay. Soft clay is earthy or like earthy with fine granularity, usually less than 5 micron meter. But it is easy to air-slake and become loose in water with a good plasticity and high combination.

Medium-soft clay is mainly made up of kaolinite, also has illite and hard diaspore, but the alumina oxide content is 25%-30%, some reaches more than 30%. Its character is between the soft clay and hard clay with low plasticity, but it has some combination, usually fire-resistant temperature high than 1630℃.

High alumina clay

High alumina clay’s main mineral is diaspore, and some boehmite, gibbsite, kaolinite, etc. with the alumina oxide content more than 50%, sometime more than 90%, fire-resistant temperature more than 1770℃. Under high temperature and pressure, it has a high slag-resistance. High alumina clay is dense block or oolitic with coarse surface and it’s hard to air-slake with no plasticity.

Fire-resistant clay

The main application of fire-resistant clay is making the fire-resistant material, which is of high fire-resistant temperature, heat steady, acid & caustic slag-resistant. It has various applications in almost all of the industry kiln and thermal equipment because of its richness in resources, traditional application experience, simple craft, low cost of making, etc. So far the output of our country’s fire-resistant is made up of fire-resistant clay, which occupy 80% of the total volume. The hard clay which is as the aggregate of fire-resistant sticky clay brick is used for smelting furnace in steel industry, lining brick, runner brick, poured steel facility in molten steel ladle, heating furnace, soaking pit and other industry furnace, etc. Hard clay combined with industry alumina oxide can be made into mullite, into black lead clay brick and clay crucible combined with black lead.

High alumina clay is mainly made into aggregate of high alumina brick of high alumina fire-resistant material, which is used for liner of the important parts in blast furnace, open-hearth furnace, electric furnace, molten steel ladle, heating and soaking furnace of steel industry and important parts in other industry kiln. What’s more, it can be made into alumina-magnesia brick combined with grain magnesite, corundum brick with sintered alumina. The iron oxide high content alumina clay can be used for the raw material of laterite, which is used for the slag of steeling or made into high-alumina cement. Soft and medium-soft clay often combines together, used for the molding products combined with agent.
